Not for food of course, but for yarn. I ended the leg of the tofutsie sock because I thought I had reached the magic halfway point in the skein. I would have liked it to be longer. Then I went to a friend's house, and used her food scale (she does weight watchers) only to find that I had 67 grams of yarn left. I wasn't even close to half way. So its off to buy a food scale today, so I don't have sock regrets. Its amazing how helpful actual measurements can be, clearly I am not a good guesser.
So I am enjoying the week vacation from school, but not as much as I would enjoy it if it were a paid vacation. My goals for the week are already shot, but I remain optimistic about getting some time to dye yarn, maybe tomorrow. I have colors dancing in my head and I was inspired by Scout J on Knitty Gritty to try using less haphazard methods to dye.

You are stealing my thoughts! Monday, I ordered a yarn scale on eBay (I couldn't find a food scale that measured fractions of a gram). And, as much as KG makes me want to poke out my eyes and rip off my ears, I too was inspired by Scout's dying episode. I even printed out the instructions to make a "warping board."
Ya got a nice week for vacation. Rain, rain, and a lot of soggy ground. Supose to be a great weekend so hopefully you'll get some yarn dyed and hang it outside to dry.
Sexual favors might be required as 1) you need tools and 2) you (or someone handy) needs to cut three feet of a metal rod into many pieces. It does seem a little labor intensive. I'll bring the directions Wednesday night.
My aunt gave me a food scale for the wedding that does ounces and grams. I love it and use it for yarn all the time. (I use it for cooking too).
I was planning on dyeing yarn this weekend, and I didn't even see Scout on Knitty Gritty. The dye planets must be aligned.
How did you find the twofootsie yarn to knit with? I have some in my stash, havent decided what it wants to be yet
I hear office supply stores have the scales. My LYS got theirs there, and they lovingly call it the "drug scale."
Linda:
I read about your scale woes and felt compelled to share my favorite scale for weighing sock yarn and only sock yarn (and it only costs $3.50!!! ... http://www.sciplus.com/singleItem.cfm?terms=2599&cartLogFrom=Search. It measures in oz. and up to 100g in the tiniest of increments. Let me know what you think!!! I wanna see the yarn you dyed!!! C ya ... Donna Crystal
